"Only American audiences ask me, “What should I do?” I’m never asked this in third world. When you go to Turkey or Colombia or Brazil, they don’t ask you, “What should I do?” They tell you what they’re doing… These are poor, oppressed people, living under horrendous condition, and they would never dream of asking you what they should do. It’s only in high privileged cultures like ours that people ask this question… We can do anything. But people here are trained to believe that there are easy answers, and it doesn’t work that way. If you want to do something, you have to be dedicated and committed to it day after day. Educational programs, organizing, activism. That’s the way things change. You want a magic key, so you can go back to watching television tomorrow? It doesn’t exist."

"If you wish to see the truth then
hold no opinions for or against
anything. To set up what you like
against what you dislike is the
disease of the mind."

"The mind is sharper and keener in seclusion and uninterrupted solitude. Originality thrives in seclusion free of outside influences beating upon us to cripple the creative mind. Be alone—that is the secret of invention: be alone. That is when ideas are born."

"

I am a man who loves to divide the world and venture opinion. For example: Painters are more selfish than writers. And why not? A painter must procure a canvas, brushes, gesso, oils, gouaches, mineral spirit, more canvas, brushes, oils…whereas the writer requires so little- a thin tablet of paper, a pen. why, the pen need not even be new or in good condition!

Indeed I carry with me at all times a good supply of the aforementioned writers’ necessities. One is always happy, when in a group, to give the writers their equipment and send them off to a corner. One is content indeed to see the beleaguered creatures occupied, at last.

"students must not be subjected to the transmission of knowledge, but should be
taught to question knowledge, see the misrepresentations in it, and search for
the imperialism, patriarchy, racism, and vulgar capitalism that has shaped it and
that continues to sustain it."
